Worm Spark Fund
Welcome to the Worm Spark Fund! We are excited to support the bright minds shaping the future of C. elegans research. We understand that groundbreaking ideas often emerge from passion projects pursued independently, separate from the main research focus and funding of a lab.
Inspired by the spirit of giving back to the community, we are thrilled to launch the Worm Spark Fund – a €1000 grant specifically for one Master's student or one PhD student conducting research using Caenorhabditis elegans. This fund is uniquely designed to fuel these independent ventures, providing financial support for your own innovative side projects that are not currently funded by your primary research lab.
Whether your spark lies in exploring a novel genetic interaction, testing a bold hypothesis in neurobiology, or pursuing a unique angle in aging or developmental biology, the Worm Spark Fund is here to help ignite your research journey.
(Who Can Apply?)
Eligibility for the Worm Spark Fund is open to:
- Master’s and PhD students currently enrolled in an accredited university or research institute.
- Applicants must be actively working on a research project involving C. elegans.
- Crucially, the project for which funding is sought must be a side project, distinct from the applicant's main thesis or lab-funded research, and not currently supported by their primary research lab.
- Open globally.
(Application Requirements)
To apply for the Worm Spark Fund, please prepare and submit the following documents as a single PDF file, similar to the process outlined in the sources:
- Research Summary (max 1000 words):
- Describe your C. elegans side project idea in detail. Explain its goals, methods, and potential significance.
- Clearly articulate how this project is separate from your main research and why it is not supported by your primary lab funding.
- Explain how the €1000 fund will specifically support your side project. Provide details on how you plan to use the funds (such as travel for a conference related to your side project, purchasing devices or reagents necessary for the side project, or other relevant expenses directly tied to this independent work).
- Supervisor’s Endorsement Letter:
- A short letter from your research supervisor. This letter should endorse your application for the side project fund and ideally confirm that the described project is indeed an independent endeavor not funded by the lab.
(How to Apply)
Applications will be accepted on this webpage during the specified application opening time.
(Application Phase Dates)
Please note the key dates for the Worm Spark Fund application cycle, following a timeline similar to the one in the sources:
- Applications Open: July 1st
- Deadline to Apply: August 15th
- Award Notification: September 10th
- Funds Disbursed By: September 30th
Following a model that champions open science and community involvement, the selection process will be transparent:
- All submitted proposals (excluding names and institutional affiliations) will be published publicly.
- The final funded project will be chosen by public vote from a shortlist of selected proposals.
- Winning projects will be announced publicly and updated on our site for others to learn from.
We look forward to seeing the innovative side projects the Worm Spark Fund will support! We encourage all eligible Master's and PhD students with exciting, independent C. elegans research ideas to apply.
